There, in the vast rugged terrain in the northern center of the country of Niger, is located the Natural Reserve of the Air Mountains and Tenure. This reserve covers an area of 7,700,000 hectares and forms the wider conservation area across Africa, but the sanctuary itself covers only one sixth of that extension.
The site includes the volcanic massif of Air, Shelia Island in the middle of the Saharan desert of Tenure, a climate, flora and fauna totally unique, where the variety of landscapes and plant and animal species in reserves is exceptional. The huge dunes of the Tenure region and the magical scenery there are created, have made have one of the most beautiful deserts on Earth.
In the Paleolithic era, the Air Mountains have been inhabited; the sign of this are the remains of Paleolithic have been discovered in the area. Most archaeological sites are located along the ancient rivers and lakes margins in savanna woodland on the edge of the Tenure. There are plenty of arrowheads, axes, mortars and grinding stones.
The way to meet with the Tenure Natural Reserve of the Air is by light aircraft flights or voyages through 4 × 4 vehicles, being the most recommended because it can better appreciate this large region of sand and also made camping to rest.
